Just as Jesus prayed for his disciples in John 17 before handing himself over to death on a cross, he also prayed for you and for me:
"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." ~Jesus
So often when reading the words of Jesus, it seems he is speaking to the people there with him in the moment. In this tender prayer, Jesus is most definitely speaking for you and for me...the Church today. Even now, he continually prays to the Father, interceding on our behalf. How awesome is it that he has given us his glory through the Holy Spirit, just as the Father gave him glory, that we might live as one in complete unity and that the world might know Jesus!
How well do I remain in him, as he is in the Father? How well am I promoting unity and love? Am I doing my part? Am I daily tapping into the source, His Word, allowing the Holy Spirit to purify my heart? Am I remaining in the vine so I too can produce good fruit? These should be the questions we ask ourselves each and every day as we await his return.
