We are seeking His direction and listening for His voice. As a child is guided by his father's hand and comforted by his father's voice, we desire to walk along His path, following His footprints.
In thinking about this word humility, there are many things that come to mind from a worldly perspective. However, God’s perspective forces us to take a long hard look at ourselves in the mirror.
Philippians 2:3-11 (NIV) puts it this way:
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
If the God of all creation can take on the appearance of man, not considering equality with God something to be used to his own advantage, but also humble himself by becoming obedient to death on a cross, then who am I to question God? Who am I to place myself high above broken hearts? Who am I to cast judgment? Who am I to receive His grace? Who am I to withhold His grace from others? How can we consider ourselves much higher than the world? Our wealth is much greater than nearly 95% of the wealth of our brothers and sisters of lands both far and near!
But praise His holy name: the name by which all men are saved! For He has conquered the divide! He has exalted the humble, the poor and the weak!
Father, make my every action demonstrate shalom to those who need it most. Help me demonstrate kindness to those around me. Help me to practice humility as Christ Jesus demonstrated pure humility on the cross.
Jesus, form within me a humble heart that I might not misplace my calling; I would rather die than to squander it away for worldly gain!
